week 1
  1. Can you think of a time or a set of circumstances, when you know God was speaking to you? How did you know?
  2. What are some of the ways that God speaks to us?
  3. Why is it sometimes easy to dismiss the words of God that are spoken to us through other people?
  4. What is accountability?
  5. Read James 5:16.  Why is it so difficult to confess our sins to one another?
  6. Do you think that confessing our sins to one another is optional?
  7. Are we keeping one another accountable in this group?  Discuss.
  8. How can we, as a group, do a better job of keeping one another accountable (follow-up question only, skip it if it was covered already).
  9. What is the primary biblical model for discipleship (answer: apprenticeship)
  10. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages to trying to carry out the principle of apprenticeship our culture and context?
  11. Read Ephesians 5:15-21.  What does it mean for us to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ?
  12. Read and discuss Prov. 13:10, Prov. 13:18, and Prov. 27:6.  Can you think of a time that someone was willing to challenge or correct you, out of love?  How did that go?
  13. Take time to pray for one another, and particularly to pray for ways that your group can carry out these principles together.

  1. Building update: lease is signed! We’ve raised just over 40k so far. Move in date, April 1
  2. Read John 8:47, do you expect to hear from God?  Do you expect other people to hear from God? Who? Why them?
  3. Read and discuss 2 Tim. 3:14-17
  4. From our Statement of Faith:The Sufficiency of Scripture:
    WE BELIEVE that the Holy Spirit inspired the human authors of Holy Scripture so that the Bible is without error in the original manuscripts. We receive the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments as our final, absolute authority, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.
  5. What are some of the other things that people sometimes make their final, absolute authority?
  6. What are the problems connected with thinking of the Bible as a rule book?
  7. What are the problems connected with thinking of the Bible as a road map for life?
  8. What are the problems connected with thinking of the Bible as a source of momentary inspiration?
  9. What are the problems connected with thinking of the Bible as a collection of stories?
  10. Read 1 Peter 1:10-12.  Why would the angels be obsessed with message of the Bible? (answer: b/c the bible is the revelation of, Jesus, and they are obsessed with Jesus!)
  11. How is the Bible like a kaleidoscope?
  12. Read this quote:…from George Mueller, who lived over 100 years ago in England and was famous for caring for thousands of orphans…
  13. “…according to my judgement the most important point to be attended to is this: above all things see to it that your souls are happy in the Lord. Other things may press upon you, the Lord’s work may even have urgent claims upon your attention, but I deliberately repeat, it is of supreme and paramount importance that you should seek above all things to have your souls truly happy in God Himself! But in what way shall we attain to this settled happiness of soul? How shall we learn to enjoy God? How shall we obtain such an all-sufficient soul-satisfying portion in him as shall enable us to let go the things of this world as vain and worthless in comparison? I answer, This happiness is to be obtained through the study of the Holy Scriptures. God has therein revealed Himself unto us in the face of Jesus Christ.

    In the Scriptures, by the power of the Holy Ghost, He makes Himself known unto our souls. . . . [Therefore] The very earliest portion of the day we can command should be devoted to the meditation on Scriptures. Our souls should feed upon the Word. . . . This intimate experimental acquaintance with Him will make us truly happy. Nothing else will.
